Richmond Library ‘Grab-a-Bag’ sale

Wednesday, Feb. 3

The Richmond Public Library will host its fifth annual Grab-a-Bag sale on Wednesday, Feb. 3, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Main Branch is located at 325 Civic Center Plaza in Richmond.

Items for sale will include books, videos and other media. Customers may select any 10 items for $2.

Proceeds from the sale will be used for programs, books and equipment at the city’s libraries.

Oakland Chambers of Commerce annual business luncheon

Thursday, Feb. 4

The Chambers of Commerce of Oakland will host an annual business luncheon on Thursday, Feb. 4, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Hilton Oakland Airport, located at One Hegenberger Road.

Featured speakers will include Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums, Oakland City Administrator Dan Lindheim and Community and Economic Development Agency Director Walter Cohen.

Participating chambers of commerce are the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Alameda County, Korean Business Association, Oakland African American Chamber of Commerce, Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Oakland Vietnamese Chamber of Commerce.

Charcoal Park Super Bowl extravaganza

Friday, Feb. 5, to Sunday, Feb. 7

Charcoal Park, a new cultural center located in Oakland’s Fruitvale district, will host a Super Bowl extravaganza Friday, Feb. 5, through Sunday, Feb. 7, to help raise funds for survivors of Haiti’s recent devastating earthquake. 

Charcoal Park, located at 2727 Fruitvale Ave. in East Oakland, offers a black memorabilia gift store, an art gallery, a year-round community enrichment program called Santa’s Crib for kids ages 5 through 15, and the relocated Everett & Jones Barbeque-Fruitvale restaurant.

Charcoal Park will also be hosting free “mixers” each Wednesday and Friday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. until Super Bowl Sunday to solicit support for Haiti survivors.

San Leandro High School Career Day

Thursday, Feb. 11

The sixth annual San Leandro High School Career Day will take place on Thursday, Feb. 11, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at San Leandro High School, located at 2200 Bancroft Ave.

Students will have the opportunity to see a wide array of career choices and talk with business professionals.

Seminar on spotting and stopping scams

Thursday, Feb. 11

Alameda County Supervisor Keith Carson, the Alameda County Consumer Affairs Commission and the California Department of Consumers Affairs will present a “Take Charge California Seminar” on Thursday, Feb. 11, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Berkeley City College Auditorium, located at 2050 Center St.  

The seminar will focus on learning how to spot, stop and report scams.

Special guest speakers will include Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley; Tom Vacar, KTVU/Fox 2’s consumer editor; and Sonya Merold, acting deputy director for the Consumer and Community Empowerment Division with the California Department of Consumer Affairs.
