Final Music on the Main Concert Honors Community, Celebrates Success
Richmond, Aug. 9, 2011 – Richmond Main Street Initiative (RMSI) is proud to present the final Music on the Main concert of the season on August 24 from 5 – 7:30 pm in the FoodsCo lot at 12th and Macdonald. The concert will feature performances by LAVA, a Latin rhythms band, and East Bay Center’s BLOCO steel pan band. Mexican folk dance will also be performed by the College Prep dancers. With this summer marking the series’ 10-year anniversary, turnout doubled to nearly 400 people attending the July 27 concert featuring local blues great Jesse James, among other talent.
According to an event survey, some concertgoers report that they feel more connected to the Richmond community at the event, which may contribute to increasing attendance. “Music on the Main was created to offer a safe and fun activity to bring together our diverse community,” said Amanda Elliott, executive director. “Our increased attendance proves that in spite of recent violence the community spirit is still very much alive in Richmond.”
RMSI programs are made possible through generous donations by the Richmond Community Redevelopment Agency, Chevron, Kaiser Permanente, the Richmond Community Foundation, Mechanics Bank, Sims Metal, D.P. Security and friends of Main Street. Retail, food, and informational booths are available. For more information on acquiring a booth or volunteering for Richmond Main Street events call 510-236-4049.
